Classical Trombone: Yamaha YSL
641 Red Brass Bell
Why?
Because it gives a dark rounded tone and can be played very loud without
distorting the sound. The tone is consistent over the range of the instrument.
It is heavy enough to hold a sound which matches a large orchestra but still
agile enough to play those awkward solo's.
Jazz Trombone: King 3B
Why? Where agility and range whilst playing at unbelievable volume
levels is the key Ferg finds the 3B is the best instrument. It is
possible to play this trombone at virtually inaudible levels and at deafening
volume without the quality of the sound being effected. It is just as agile as
the 2B and the 2.5B but can easily beat their tone when using dynamics. When
range is the aim it is easily possible to achieve over 5 octaves on the 3B.
Mouthpiece: Ferg uses an unusual
mouthpiece which is the equivalent to either a 13C or 14C. It has a ridge around
the rim which gives it a very clear tone and the depth and shank allows lots of
air to be pushed through. It is an ideal mouthpiece for him because he looks for
a powerful sound and a very large range (preferably up to and above 5 octaves).
Mic's: RADIO : Ferg uses an AKG
UHF 40 diversity receiver, PT40/SR40 Transmitter with a Sennheiser clip on microphone.
Modification: Ferg has
had an extra bar, a metal plate and a metal tube attached to the upper third of
his trombone to hold the radio system in place. It enables him to adjust the controls
on the transmitter whilst performing and to unclip it very quickly if ever there is a
problem. This system works for both the radio mic and the standard clip-on mic.
The modifications were custom made by Paul Andrews at Brass Toff.
